4 WAYS TO BOOST IMMUNITY

MAGGIE O'MEARA

In our world today, boosting your own immunity is especially important. Having a robust immune system is key to good health as it can fight against any germs you encounter. You may never get sick or be especially prone to the flu. You may be constantly on a plane and exposed to germs constantly or you may be living your best life, doing what you do, but the bottomline is that germs, dirt and grime live everywhere and it is important to keep yourself protected and strong. This starts from the inside-out. It starts with your immunity system and we are here to help! Below are four ways to boost your immunity.

1) Supplements

Many people often look to supplements first when wanting to boost their immunity. There are researched supplements on the market that can potentially improve your immunity, including zinc, elderberry, vitamin C, and vitamin D. However, supplements should not be depended on and can only offer a small benefit in immune health. Make sure to include a variety of foods in your diet to consume a diverse amount of nutrients and vitamins.

2) Shiitake Mushrooms

These mushrooms are cultivated and eaten in many Asian countries. Traditionally in China and Japan, shiitake mushrooms have been considered medicinal. The Journal of the American College of Nutrition found that adults who ate shiitake mushrooms every day for a month had stronger immune cells that were quicker to react to potential invaders like viruses and bacteria. Try adding mushrooms to a salad, stir-fry, pasta, soup, or simply roasted with olive oil.

3) Ginger

Another ingredient to add to foods when warding off sickness. Ginger is known to alleviate inflammation in the body. Ginger tea is one of the oldest medicinal drinks in the world. Try simmering fresh ginger in hot water for 20 minutes, and then adding lemon and honey for a refreshing tea to sip on.

4) Healthy Lifestyle

The top way to improve your immune system is by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This includes having a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, reducing stress, washing your hands, and exercising regularly. Consistently keeping up with these habits is essential for your health and well-being.
