5 HEALTHY WAYS TO ENERGIZE

MAGGIE O'MEARA

Ever need a boost of vitality to get through an afternoon slump or a strenuous activity? Feeling sluggish and tired a little too often for your liking? You need more energy! At the store, you’ll often see supplements or food products promising to be “energy boosters”. However, many of these products contain weird chemicals or ingredients like ginseng, guarana, and chromium picolinate, which have no scientific evidence to actually give you more energy. Fortunately, there are some natural and healthy ways to boost your energy levels throughout the day on your own!  Below are 5 easy ways to re-energize and get productive:

1) Exercise in the Afternoon

Once mid-day rolls around, it is common to have the urge to nap or take a rest. But when productivity is needed, this feeling can be detrimental. So instead of hitting the sack, try hitting the gym. Studies show that working out can increase efficiency and production. Try going for a quick walk, dancing to your favorite playlist, or doing an online workout video when you feel you some exercise to get you going.

2) Eat Chocolate

Go ahead and give into that chocolate craving, because it’s actually what’s best for a little pick-me-up. Cocoa contains flavonoids, which boost cognitive skills and improves mood. Keep a quality chocolate bar at your desk or in your bag as a little treat and re-energizer.

3) Get Sunlight

Have a quick 20 minute break in the day? Try getting outside if possible. Studies show that just 20 minutes outdoors is enough to feel more alive and energized. Can’t get outside? You can also just open your curtains or shades to get some sunlight. Getting outdoors or in sunlight can play a huge role on the body’s energy grooves and circadian rhythms.

4) Eat Snacks With Complex Carbs

Eating healthy snacks allows our bodies to have the fuel it needs to function at its best. So make sure to have ready-to-eat food close by when needed. Also make your snacks contain complex carbohydrates! Foods like quinoa, lentils, beans, whole grains, yogurt, fruit, and vegetables contain complex carbohydrates that have been shown to boost energy levels. Some snack ideas that you can take on-the-go include yogurt with granola, brown rice cakes with almond butter, wheat pita bread with hummus, or popcorn and fruit.

5) Laugh!

Studies suggest that laughing can actually boost your energy levels! So re-energize by watching funny videos or joking around with co-workers, family members, and friends. Find what makes you laugh and have it for energizing purposes. This will get you to perk up, de-stress, and feel vitalized!
